What is microneedling with PRP?

As microneedling with PRP is a combination of two treatments, it is important to understand the role and function of each one in order to understand how and why they are effective together. The next sections will look at how microneedling works to regenerate and restore the skin’s beauty and how PRP delivers safe, natural, and effective skin rejuvenation without chemicals or surgery.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation technique that works by causing microscopic injuries to the surface of the skin with very fine needles. That might sound daunting, but it is a safe and gentle process. The injuries are immensely small but just enough to trigger the skin’s own healing processes. As part of those processes, key proteins like collagen and elastin are made, which improve skin health, elasticity, and texture, essentially building the skin back stronger than before.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is part of blood. Specifically, it is a part of the blood plasma that has lots of platelets (which help with clotting and healing), along with important regenerative proteins. For PRP therapy, this plasma is extracted from the patient’s blood and then injected back into the patient’s skin to rejuvenate it. It helps with wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging, restoring fullness and improving complexion.

How do microneedling and PRP work together?

These two treatments are perfectly effective and viable skin regeneration techniques. But, in tandem, their benefits are multiplied. This is because the microneedling process helps the PRP penetrate deeper. The needles form microchannels, and the plasma flows through those channels to take effect throughout the skin.

Because of this, having platelet rich plasma with microneedling at the same time is largely preferable and more recommendable than having them separately. If you were to have them separately, you would still experience benefits, but those benefits are more prominent, visible, and fast-acting when the two work together.

Meso PRP vs. traditional microneedling

Regular microneedling simply involves using fine needles to trigger skin healing and new cell growth. It does not, however, introduce any fresh nutrients or proteins directly into the skin. It merely incites the body to make its own proteins. Because of this, the benefits you see and feel from microneedling are, to an extent, limited.

A microneedling PRP facial pushes past those limits. You have the benefits of the microneedling, plus the nutrient-boosting injection of plasma as a supplementary form of skin rejuvenation. The plasma delivers nutrients and proteins immediately to the skin for faster healing, more efficient cell repair, and, ultimately, more visible effects.

How is mesotherapy PRP performed?

In the next sections, we will guide you through the entire mesotherapy PRP treatment process. We will look at what to expect before, during, and post-procedure.

Before the procedure

You will first have a consultation session. This is the patient’s opportunity to ask questions and learn about the process. Equally, your doctor can inspect your skin, learn about your health, and inform you. They will let you know, during the consultation, about how best to prepare for the day of treatment. Common recommendations are:

  • Avoid spending lots of time in the sun or having any other UV exposure
  • Avoid skin care products that are rich in specific ingredients, such as retinoids

Your doctor will also advise you regarding any medications you might be taking and may ask some questions about your general health. Then, on the day of your procedure, try to arrive at the clinic on time to be prepared and treated promptly.

During the procedure

Your provider will first numb your skin at the site of injection. They will take a blood sample from your arm to extract the plasma – the blood will be processed in a special machine. Microneedling occurs when fine needles pass over your skin, and the PRP is subsequently injected. The whole process should take no more than 45 minutes.

Aftercare – What is the recovery process like?

Patients should expect mild redness and perhaps a bit of swelling on the treatment site. Your doctor may apply a numbing balm to ease these symptoms. They will also advise you regarding how to look after your skin post-treatment, though you should be able to resume a regular routine within 24 hours. You should avoid excessive sun exposure and follow your doctor’s skincare recommendations.
